Best in the SW is THE BEST

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

I went to the Best in the SW animation and motion graphics conference last week, and had an absolute blast! Finally a conference that focuses on the art of animation and not just motion graphics. Over half of the conference was dedicated to character animation alone!

The main reason why I went was because of the hands-on workshop with Phil Nibbelink, a former Disney animator who worked on movies like The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, and was animation director on Fievel Goes West and Casper. He is now famous for his movie Romeo and Juliet, sealed with a kiss that he singlehandedly produced and animated! Traditionally in Flash! All in Flash! Did I say the whole movie was done in Flash?

The premier of the movie was at the conference, and it is truly a master piece. I learned a ton from him about character animation and design, and he had many funny anecdotes about squash and stretch on apples in the Black Cauldron, the telescoping clavicals on Casper and what it was like to work with Steven Spielberg.

I also went to sessions with Chris Georgenes, who writes tutorials for the Adobe Dev Center on simulating 3D in Flash. He had a few cute animations that starred his daughter. His examples of the 2D girl on a 3D tricycle convinced me to get Swift3D.

The character animation sessions by Stanton Cruse were also extremely helpful. He showed us the animated shows that he has done for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. The best one was the show Weighty Decisions for Cartoon Network with the characters Angel and Devil. He showed us how the characters were set up and had many handy Flash plug-in recommendations. The main one was the AnimSlider Pro, by Animonger. I did not know this was out there, and now I don’t know how I did without!

Another highlight for me, who didn’t go to Adobe MAX, was the demonstration by Richard Galvan of Flash 9 that will have IK bones in it! Many people were drooling, including me.

Needless to say, I will be going back next year. Thanks to Elaine Montoya and Becky Padillas from Zocoloco studios for organizing this event! Stay tuned for conference photos.

Quiz Characters

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

We animated a series of three interactive characters for an upcoming quiz for the U.S. Census Bureau.

Commissioned by Mindshare Interactive who programmed the quiz for the older age groups, we animated three characters to fit in with the quiz questions. We made one standard templated animation, and swapped out bodyparts for all different characters. The characters animate depending on a right, or wrong answer.

Keep tuned for the elementary kids site, that we are working on as well!

Saxon Math Sampler

Monday, October 15th, 2007

We have just finished a series of 3 Technology Samplers for Harcourt’s Saxon Math. The series included a sampler for California, Texas and National. The samplers give an overview of the student and teacher’s resources available for the Saxon Math program. The samplers were designed to run off of a CD-ROM and adapted for web use.
